Our Story
Why I Started EvenGround
EvenGround is personal.
In 2016, I found myself in a place I never imagined I'd be. I was dealing with depression, having thoughts of suicide, and trying to make sense of a life that seemed to be falling apart. A relationship had ended. I had lost my job. I experienced homelessness. And eventually, I spent five days in a psychiatric hospital.
But one of the hardest parts wasn't just what happened to me. It was figuring out what life was supposed to look like afterward.
I remember going to my first psychiatrist appointment after leaving the hospital. There was plexiglass between me and the receptionist. I was already trying to navigate so much, and here I was, sitting behind glass, trying to get help.
That experience stayed with me.
Because when you're going through something difficult, the last thing you need is for getting help to feel even harder.
I also know what it means to have people show up for you. People who help you find your footing when you're not quite sure what comes next. And I know how different life can feel when you don't have that kind of support.
That's part of why EvenGround exists.
Sometimes, before you can think about your future, your goals, or what comes next, you need somewhere to sleep. Something to eat. Someone who cares. A little room to figure things out without the weight of everything else pressing down on you.
EvenGround was created with that understanding.
Not everyone needs someone to tell them how to rebuild their life. Sometimes, they just need somewhere steady enough to begin.
Sometimes you just need somewhere to continue.
